My Profile
As a child I never for one moment thought I'd have a career as a herbalist, in fact I probably didn't know what one was! I originally studied Law at University and after graduating began working first in recruitment, then at Somerset County Council. During this time I began to develop an interest in alternative health care following the death of a close friend to cancer and the continuing ill-health of those around me. My Law degree taught me to have enquiring but suspicious approach to claims, and after investigation into alternative medicine I was suitably impressed with herbalism to give up my career and re-train as a herbalist.
My training at Lincoln University lasted three years and culminated in a Bsc (Hons) Herbal Medicine which provided me with in-depth training in all conventional aspects of health and disease.
It also covered subjects such as drug-herb interactions, energetics, nutrition and required the completion of over 500 hours of clinical practice dealing with patients.
I am dedicated to providing patients with a holistic, individualised service aiming to treat the root causes of illness, fusing western herbal medicine with influences from worldwide systems of traditional medicine. I approach disease as a symptom of imbalance in the body and by addressing these imbalances with herbal treatment, a person's vitality may be improved.
I have always had a fascination with the natural world and believe that optimum health may be encouraged through accessing the power held in nature. I have named my practice 'The Sacred Garden' to reflect the powerful nature of the divine, found in many forms, in nature. Our herbal traditions stretch thousands of years in the UK and many herbs used in my practice now form the basis for modern drugs. Science continues to make 'discoveries' about the healing properties of medicinal plants, many of which have a history of traditional use which is known and drawn upon by herbalists. In my practice I integrate modern scientific knowledge and herbal tradition, placing the welfare of the patient at the centre of treatment.
I have used herbal medicine myself during pregnancy, labour and for support in the post-natal period. I am especially interested in helping women through this challenging time.
